Several studies have found that body mass index (BMI) are associated with risk of death from heart disease and other chronic diseases.
But according to a new analysis in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, waist size provide a much more accurate way to predict the likelihood of heart patients died at an early age due to heart attack or other causes.
Researchers found that heart patients with waist-hip ratio is large or large waist size, larger than 35 inches (89 cm) for women or 40 inches (101.6 cm) for men, 70 percent more likely to die than patients with a smaller waist.
And of course the combination of a large waist and high BMI increase the risk of death became even greater.
"The most important is the distribution of fat, more than anything," said lead researcher, Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, MD, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota, as reported by CNN.
According to Jean-Pierre Despres, Ph.D., director of research at the Quebec Heart and Lung Institute at Laval University in Quebec City, this new study provides more evidence about the lack of BMI in assessing cardiac risk.
"If you measure your BMI, you do not judge your body shape and does not assess body fat distribution. I'm not saying that the BMI is not useful, just that we need to know that BMI is a total cholesterol of fat. We know that there are good and bad cholesterol, as well there are good fats and bad, "Despres said.
BMI also does not distinguish between fat and muscle, Despres added. He explained that heart patients who underwent lifestyle may experience a decrease in BMI because they lose muscle mass, while patients with heart disease are becoming more active can actually gain weight and increased BMI because they add muscle mass.
Why waist size or abdominal fat is more dangerous?
Abdominal fat tends to be a sign of visceral fat or fat that collects around the organs in the abdomen. These fats may promote insulin resistance and unhealthy cholesterol, and also can increase inflammation.
"Genetics plays a role of 'very strong' to determine whether to accumulate weight around the waist," Despres said.
Heart Attacks More Often Occurs After Warm Water Bath
In many cases, heart attacks occur after strenuous exercise or sex for example. However, based on research, heart attacks are more common after a hot bath, especially in cold weather.
Chika Nishiyama, researchers from Kyoto Prefectural University revealed that after observing some 11,000 cases of cardiac arrest in Osaka. Observations were done in 2005-2007, thus bypassing several times a change of seasons.
At the heart attacks that occur after a hot bath, the number of events 10 times higher than the winter season when warm. That is a heart attack after a hot bath is more common when the weather is cold, when many people want to warm themselves.
In addition to a warm bath, lots of other activities that most people do before the heart attack is sleeping. Sports actually came third with only 0.5 percent, less than a shower or bath with warm water.
Learn more, here are some activities undertaken ranking of people before having a heart attack according to the study, as quoted from Dailymail, / Detikhealth.com:
Sleep: 22%
Warm bath: 9%
Work: 3%
Sports: 0.5%
Other: 65.5%
In addition to the number of events for more, also more vulnerable to heart attacks occur after a hot bath after exercise than when seen from the duration. With the same duration, 54 of the 10 million people suffered heart attacks after a hot bath, while only 10 of the 10 million people experience back pain after exercise.
Although not yet certain relationships and mechanisms, Nishiyama expect a warm bath in cold weather causes blood pressure to drop dramatically. As a result, reduced heart function and then suddenly crash or a heart attack.
"It's good to do pendegahan to avoid bathing in warm water during cold weather, especially for people who do have heart problems," he wrote in his report that was published in the journal Resuscitation.
Orange Skin for Alternative Medicine Heart Disease
Not just a healthy fruit, tangerines also have an important nutrient for heart health on the skin. Research shows, the content of the tangerine skin can reduce the risk of damage to blood vessels.
Efficacy was not shared by all types of tangerines but only on certain species of yellow, old or in English often called Tangerine. Tangerine color green is also efficacious, but the color is dark yellow proved to be more potent.
The secret contained in the nobiletin, a kind of pigments or compounds that give color to the skin of tangerines. Nobiletin tangerine skin was mentioned 10 times more heart healthy than the antioxidant content in Bali Oranges.
Recent research conducted by Dr. Murray Huff from the University of Western Ontario demonstrated, nobiletin atheroschlerosis or effectively prevent the formation of plaque in blood vessels. Plaque can damage or clog arteries and trigger heart attacks.
Rupture of blood vessels also can trigger a stroke if it occurs around the brain. Therefore, the researchers concluded that nobiletin is also useful to prevent hemorrhage or stroke strokes triggered by blood vessel damage in the brain.
The study, published in the latest issue of the journal Diabetes was also mentioned, nobiletin could improve insulin sensitivity. That is, content in the skin of tangerines is also the potential to be developed as a drug for diabetics.
Previously, Dr. Huff also has examined other citrus species namely Bali Orange or grapefruit. This fruit contains flavonoids called naringenin, a type of antioxidants that are proven effective in reducing the risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome.
"The surprise was that nobiletin was 10 times more effective than naringenin in preventing atheroschlerosis," said Dr. Huff as quoted from Dailymail / detikHealth.
Unfortunately it does not explain whether it can be eaten directly or tangerines because scientists only take extracts from its content.
Love Your Heart, Not Too Often Work Overtime
Hard worker always worked countless hours, even overtime allotments was considered as a separate provision. Yet too often working overtime also have risks, namely an increased risk of heart attack due to stress the unconscious.
As fit-bugarnya human body and mind, if given the chance to break it will experience stress physically and psychologically. Various studies have proved, cortisol, or stress is one of the triggers of a heart attack.
Recent research conducted at University College London revealed that employees who every day work more than 11 hours is more susceptible to heart attacks. The risk is about 67 percent higher than employees who work 7-8 hours / day.
The conclusion was obtained after the researchers make the observation of 7000 civil servants in London. In observations made during these 11 years, 192 people had a heart attack and largely because it works more than 11 hours / day.
Body mass index (BMI), age, blood pressure and cholesterol levels do affect the risk of heart attack. But the stress of working overtime can increase the risk by 5 percent and is expected to trigger a heart attack at 6,000 persons / year worldwide.
"These findings still need further study to confirm it, but this could be a warning for those who often work overtime, especially who already have other risk factors," said Professor Mika Kivimaki, who led the study, as quoted by Reuters detikHealth.
Just like in Indonesia, most companies hire employees in the UK for 7-8 hours / day. When employees hired more than 11 hours / day, consciously or not, aka the stress hormone cortisol levels can increase and become a risk factor for heart attack.
Men Hobbies affair Taxable Vulnerable Heart Attack
Research shows that intercourse regularly can nourish the heart. But for men, the condition should be done with an official partner having sex with mistresses because it will increase the risk of heart attack.
A study in Italy showed that sex no longer provide benefits for the heart if it involves an element of betrayal. For men who are married, the risk of heart attack increases if often have sex with another woman.
"We found that the attitude of being unfaithful is a risk factor for cardiovascular disorders ternmasuk heart attacks later in life," said Alessandra Fisher, a researcher of Sexual Medicine and Andrology Unit, Florence, Italy.
According to him, men who like cheating more likely to show symptoms of depression than other men that her sex life is fine. In that study, the men admitted having an affair because her household was not harmonious.
This condition triggers the depression that is characterized by several symptoms. Quoted from The Star, Monday (3/21/2011), the symptoms observed in this study include obesity, high blood pressure and lifestyle changes including consuming alcohol and more frequent smoking.
Depression is accompanied by symptoms such obviously increases the risk of heart attack. Although not directly triggered by infidelity, increased risk of heart attacks could worsen if the forbidden relationships lead to new conflicts.
The study, published late in 2010 it did not say how many men are having a heart attack because of an affair. However, various unofficial sources on the internet call, 85 percent of men who cheated died of a heart attack.
