Problems And Solutions In Infant Feeding And Child

In general, mothers feel the difficulty in breastfeeding her baby in an emergency. This is because the state of physical, mental and social impaired or loss of confidence to be able to breastfeed.

The problems that interfere with breastfeeding can be prevented and overcome by understanding that the milk is always available in nature, capable of breastfeeding mothers and mothers need to show his affection towards her baby. Most mothers can breastfeed well, with maximum support from family or health workers.

Another feeding breastmilk substitutes, including infant formula can be harmful because:

Contain nutrients that are not balanced,
Difficult digested by infants,
Preparation is wrong,
Equipment is not sterile,
Susceptible to infection, especially diarrhea,
Expensive,
Allergies can occur.

A. Breastfeeding Problems

1. Breastfeeding mothers

Nutrient requirements and are less liquid,
Health conditions that do not support,
Physical difficulties, such as the nipple goes down / flat, sore nipples, engorgement, mastitis (breast infection),
Lack of knowledge and the myth,
Feeling less milk, so it is not self-confident,
Having limited time, among other things because they have to queue up the water, and food in the refugee camps,
Shelter conditions that do not support for breastfeeding so that mothers feel uncomfortable,
Not getting support from family and the environment,
Distribution of food to nursing mothers is not timely,
Many aid formula so that mothers feel no need to give milk.

2. Baby
Nutritional problems in infants occur because:

Nutrient intake is less for not breast-fed,
Unable to suck properly because the baby's cleft lip, short tongue, Low Birth Weight Infants (LBW),
Nutrient intake is less because the MP-ASI is not given on time, not just quantity and low quality,
Giving local MP-ASI that does not fit with your baby.

3. Officer

Less knowledge about breastfeeding, MP-ASI in infants,
Less knowledge about the importance of breastfeeding the first time out (colostrum) although the numbers a bit.
Less knowledge about the composition of breast milk,
Have not been trained in counseling on how to breastfeed and infant feeding,
Health care facilities do not support the implementation of rooming service (10 steps to successful breastfeeding),
Not experienced in determining the type and prepare a good formula milk for babies and hygienic.

4. Baby Food Products Donations

Formula feeding and bottle of milk that comes from various sources will even increase the risk of pain in infants and children aged under two years,
Formulas are often not accompanied by a clear label, the label language not understood by officers and close to / past the expiration date,
Mass media can provide opportunities for the donors of aid formula,
If the water is clean and fuel is difficult to obtain, it should be giving MP-ASI in the form of biscuits and bottled water supplies.

Formula milk given to infants is not recommended because:

easily contaminated milk formula,
formula feeding is too thin will make your baby is malnourished,
formula feeding is too thick will make babies overweight.

5. Artificial Feeding (MP-ASI):

The lack of clean water,
Poor sanitation,
Inadequate cooking appliances,
Lack of fuel,
Rescue activity takes time and effort,
Food aid is not sustainable,
The availability of local food is limited,
Lack of knowledge in the preparation of artificial food for infants and children aged under two years.

6. Myths associated with breastfeeding

Myth 1: Mother stress can not produce milk
Fact: Stress made mother's milk flow is reduced but temporary, ASI will again be produced if there is a desire for mothers to breastfeed their babies anymore.

Myth 2: My mother is not capable of feeding malnourished
Fact: Only mothers who experienced severe levels of malnutrition (very thin) who are unable to breastfeed. Therefore, try to stay healthy and the mother can breastfeed her baby. Breastfeeding mothers need to be given additional food and beverages than usual.

Myth 3: Babies need extra fluids diarrhea
Fact: Infants less than 6 months of feeding only breast milk alone (exclusive) who suffer from diarrhea does not need to be given other liquids because breast milk contains 90% water. If severe diarrhea need to be referred to the clinic.

Myth 4: When mothers stop breastfeeding then it is difficult to breastfeed again (relactation)
Fact: My mother can breastfeed her baby if the mother has come back strong motivation to breastfeed.

Myth 5: I lack confidence in their ability to breastfeed
Fact: On the first day after delivery usually milk that comes out is colostrum, a total of 1 tablespoon. Small numbers it is sufficient for the newborn. Usually the milk starts smoothly on the third day after delivery. When mothers breastfeed infrequently, then the milk is produced only slightly, whereas more frequent feeding more milk is removed. Therefore, mothers need support and equipped with proper breastfeeding techniques.

B. Troubleshooting

To solve the problem of feeding infants and children under two years of age encountered in the field, officers need to do the following:

Understanding the feelings of the mother of the condition being experienced,
Giving priority to nursing mothers to get the timely distribution of food,
Encourage the mother to be calm and generate motivation for breastfeeding mothers,
Encourage women to eat a balanced nutritious diet is adequate in number,
Ensure mothers get extra food and adequate fluids,
Give care and adequate health care,
Give special attention and continuous support to the mother to overcome myths or mistaken beliefs about breastfeeding,
Providing information on public figures, religious leaders and families who can support mothers to breastfeed,
Provide places for adequate breastfeeding or lactation corner,
Controlling the use and preparation of infant formula donations by health personnel,
If the baby's mother does not exist (dead), mother ill, or mothers may breastfeed longer, then the baby is given other alternatives, namely:
Looking for possible donation of breast milk from mothers who are breastfeeding,
Especially for babies 0-6 months can be given formula, using the cup and should not use a bottle or pacifier. Formulas are given in accordance with instructions for use,
Infant formula should be prepared using clean water. If not available fresh water can be used bottled water.
Not recommended other forms of food given,
Sweetened condensed milk should not be administered to infants (<1 year).

If the baby had to be given formula milk, use a cup / glass, should not be given with a bottle and pacifier, because:

in bottles and teats are often lagging behind the rest of baby formula,
the rest of the milk the baby becomes a fertile place for the growth of germs that make infant diarrhea, cough and fever,
the inside of bottles and teats are very difficult to clean.
