Elderly Need More Vitamin D

People aged over 65 years are often deficient in vitamin D because the skin is getting dry. Therefore, a dietitian from Sweden said that the elderly need more vitamin D. mengasup

"Various studies have shown that vitamin D is essential to fight bone disease, muscle problems, diabetes, obesity, heart problems, cancer, infection, dementia, depression, and so forth," said Elisabeth Rothenberg, dieticians and physicians in Sweden. He has written a kind of knowledge and advice to the administration of Swedish food.


Rothenberg explained because of the darkness in the winter in the Nordic countries, many people who need vitamin D, especially the elderly as nutrition.

He cites the results of studies in the U.S. who say that vitamin D is actually a hormone that acts as a receptor to help the body accept a variety of nutrients.

For the elderly, he said, never mind having a little overweight. Therefore, a good appetite can be a healthy way to absorb vitamins and minerals. And vitamin D helps the process.

For the elderly, he suggests they should eat home made food with a healthy raw materials and avoid foods that only have a high energy but low in vitamins. "Wheat, green leafy vegetables, and fish, all that good food for the elderly," he said, as quoted by Xinhua on Thursday (11 / 8).
