Several recent studies show, watch TV for long hours have adverse effects on health. But a study at Ohio U.S. scientists revealed, in addition to health problems, habits linger on the child's TV watching can also affect their communication links with the parents.
The study, published in Human Communication Research, showed that watching TV can lead to reduced interaction between parent and child. Even a negative impact on the ability of writing, reading and language of children.
Studies conducted by Amy Nathanson and Eric Rasmussen of the Ohio State University, focused to see 'responses mother' when communicating with their children who have a habit of reading books, play toys, and watching TV.
The authors explore the interaction of 73 pairs of mothers and children. Some mothers are known in their 30s and have college degrees, while half as housewives. Ages of children ranged between 16 months to 6 years.
In that study, both mother and child were randomly assigned to one of three activities for ten minutes. After that, parents were asked to fill out questionnaires related to the development of language and the ability to read and write their children.
The results showed, the group of mothers and children who read books together, have significantly better communication than their mothers and their children watch TV.
Although the amount of communication while reading a book is not significantly higher than the group of mothers and children who toy tool (toy cars or dolls). However, the quality of maternal responsiveness to be higher when their children read books and play than watch TV.
The researchers found that when parents and children reading a book, they will use a communication style that is more active, encouraging children to learn each letter and word, thus improving their vocabulary vocabulary and grammar knowledge. In contrast to the group of mothers and children who watch TV, just a bit communication is established.
"It is important for us to limit TV viewing time in children. The loss of communication with parents of children will be bad for children's development. We encourage parents looking for entertainment beyond television," said the researcher.
